We can all pretend that Linux comes anywhere close to the ease of use and compatibility of Windows or OS X, but it doesn't. I wouldn't be caught dead using anything Microsoft in a production capacity, or using Linux or OS X for gaming. An external hard drive? Don't live in the past is my main advice. What's gone is gone. I have like two usb sticks, in different places with the most important data on each of them.
