He was a free citizen leading a normal life after he was in prison for inciting violence against the government for spreading messages that Xi is equivalent to Hitler and participating in Tienanmen revisionism to glorify that time when students violently attempted to create a counter-revolution and killed 200 soldiers while the US cheered them on hoping for another color revolution. So after that he decides to pull a publicity stunt that he absolutely didn't need to do and what he chose to do was flee to South Korea, a US military vassal state that literally just asked the US to station tactical nukes on it.
