[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (2 children) Yeah, because there's absolutely no barriers to most people getting those jobs. People just don't want more money 🙄 permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] Djtecha@lemm.ee -1 points 2 years ago (1 child) Well, one has to learn those things. But why are we shitting on people that do now? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 child) I'm not. I'm pointing out that you're presenting it as something anyone can just do, which is far from the case. Apart from many people simply lacking aptitude in the jobs you're talking about (not everyone can learn any trade), dozens of millions of people are working the equivalent of more than a full time job to (most often with limited success) make ends meet. They don't have time or energy left over from their CURRENT job(s) to retrain and/or apply for other jobs. It's not like they can just take enough time off without being fired. And then there's the fact that a large portion of struggling people live in areas where those kinds of jobs at that kind of pay either don't exist at all or there's hundreds if not thousands that want the job per opening. And no, those people can't just move. Moving costs a lot of money, time, and energy that the average working poor simply don't have. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Djtecha@lemm.ee 1 point 2 years ago (1 child) Well I agree with the difficulty here. But I think as a society we should both try to make it easier to make this transition and help individuals feel like they CAN make the transition. Otherwise it's sort of nonstop toil ain't it? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 1 point 2 years ago (1 child) On that we agree. Pretending that it's already easy or even POSSIBLE for everybody doesn't help achieve that goal, though. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Djtecha@lemm.ee 0 points 2 years ago (1 child) I don't think anyone thinks it's super easy deep down. Folks might be glib with it though. I think it does us a disservice to assume the majority cant vs the majority can. But that's just an opinion. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago I think it does us a disservice to assume the majority cant vs the majority can It's not an assumption, it's statistical fact.
