In the £300 bracket:

Sennheiser have the best audio quality.

Bose have the best noise cancelling.

Sony have a good balance between the two.

Over the ear is better for sound quality and arguably noise cancelling and definitely better for battery life/serviceability. This has been my experience from using these three brands.
