The one dominated by lobbyist-funded candidates? permalink fedilink source hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] jlh@lemmy.jlh.name 17 points 2 years ago (2 children) Defeatism is also anti-democracy, though. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] crsu@lemmy.world -2 points 2 years ago (1 child) permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] jlh@lemmy.jlh.name 2 points 2 years ago I agree that American democracy has flaws, and I'm not the one downvoting you. But I think saying "it's already rigged" when talking about foreign interference in elections is counterproductive. At a bare minimum people should try to learn and discuss the issues and vote. To advocate otherwise is to say that we've already failed. permalink fedilink source parent [–] hark@lemmy.world -3 points 2 years ago (2 children) It's not defeatism to point out the reality. If you ignore the reality then you cannot solve the problems. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (2 children) It kinda is. defeatism. noun. de·feat·ism di-ˈfēt-ˌiz-əm. : an attitude of expecting defeat or of accepting defeat with the belief that further effort would be useless. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago (1 child) Voting is the bare minimum of civic engagement in America. There is nothing wrong with pointing out the flaws in the system, but one should be advocating and working towards a solution while doing so. Just letting the mask off fascists win isnt going to solve any of America's probpems. Thanks for calling out defeatism for what it is! permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] hark@lemmy.world 1 point 2 years ago (1 child) Why do you think elections are always so close? Why do you think republicans get to fight so dirty while democrats insist on playing by the rules? If you do not address the rotten core of the system, you will be letting the mask off fascists win sooner or later. If anything you're promoting defeatism by insisting we play by the rules of a crooked system. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 child) How are you addressing the rotten core of the system? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] hark@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago That's like asking how I would address achieving world peace. In the time it took you to look up that definition and paste it to make your condescending post (as if I don't know what defeatism is), you could've just read and understood my two-sentence post. permalink fedilink source parent [–] gregorum@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 child) You’re not solving any problems though permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] hark@lemmy.world 0 points 2 years ago* The first step in solving a problem is identifying it.
