Malträtieren ist ein französisches Wort, pfui! Dafür gibt es "peinigen".

    Aber Pein kommt doch auch vom französischen "pain" und beschreibt das Gefühl, wenn man nur schlechtes Brot bekommt. Man kann hier nicht gewinnen.

    Wiktionary sagt

    From Middle High German pīne, from Old High German pīna, from Proto-West Germanic *pīnā (“torment, pain”).

    Das fände ich akzeptabel im Zangendeutschkrieg.
