I feel that pets are extenuating circumstances. Everyone wants the roll facing outward, but in some cases they can't because of an external reason. In the same way people don't want child locks on their cabinets and wall outlets, but might need them anyway.

However, I didn't really understand your point about wall distance? Even if the roll is quite far from the wall, you'd still want it facing you, no?
