With Takaichi's government in power, I'm not holding my breath for anything decent. Her comments on traditional gender roles alone make me think we're not going to get much of value here.

    I think Japanese conservatives care less about homosexuality than Western ones. It is not like they are backed by ultra-religious Christians.

    To a point, yes. I know trans and gay couples and it's complicated. Gender marker changes still require bottom surgery and ability to marry requires opposing genders on their koseki.

    The conservatives don't want to change the koseki system (which foreigners can't even have and is another problem). The conservatives don't allow couples to have separate names (unless one is a foreigner and thus no koseki name shenanigans). It also plays into the "(the right type of) people aren't having enough babies!" thing. I do know one couple who are both trans but did not have surgery wnd did have a kid which is the type of situation the government largely doesn't care about

    Yeah, it is still homophobia.

    I just want to point out that it comes more from conservative inertia and their unwillingness to recognize that they need to change the system than from hardcore religious beliefs. I suspect they will resist less once enough people accept it.

    If the majority of the population starts saying, you know, this is an oversight in our perfect administration that you would need to fix, I doubt they would resist "because Jesus".

    Yeah, I agree with that. Very few japanese are religious in the sense that many western countries understand the concept; it's unlikely to be a big force as you rightly point out. There are other factors, but nothing supernatural (though the far right venerating the emperor is a whole other can of worms)
