How did today become rapture day? I am having family members being silly about this. How did this even start?

Let me think where was I on that date? I was an army soldier living in South Korea and we may have had a monsoon that summer where significant mudslides came down from the ouijongbu mountains then we spent a few days shoveling mud and there were rumors of previously-buried corpses that had slid down from the mountains but I never saw any.
