The court's "justification" (which is obviously bullshit, but nevertheless the argument) is that allowing him to keep making money increases his ability to pay the judgement.

Despite the Onion offering a deal that the families were happy with.

It’s almost as if the court system in the US has a ton of judges who rule on their political views, not the spirit or letter of the law.
