It's 289 murders total, for the entire population that year. 0.233 out of 100,000 were murdered. That's 0.000233% of 100,000 people. permalink fedilink source parent [–] MoonMoon@lemmy.world 1 point 1 year ago (1 child) The same table on the Wiki page says that the actual count was 289 murders in 2022. Japan had a population of over 126 million in 2020. If we used your formula, that would mean there were over 289,000 murders in Japan between 2021 and 2022. See below: 230 per 100,000 = 126,146,099 x 230 ÷ 100,000 = 290,136 murders total. Whereas, 0.233 per 100,000 = 126,146,099 x 0.233 ÷ 100,000 = 294 murders total. 2+2=4, simple maths. But 290k murders per year would explain the population drop, lol. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 1 point 1 year ago It turns out that none of those number nor my own numbers are correct. I don't know where these wikis got their info from but the actual total number of homicides in Japan for the year 2022 was 853. That's for the whole country. There are multiple sources for that number but here is one: https://www.nippon.com/en/japan-data/h01860/ Either road, they are doing far better than the United States. permalink fedilink source parent
