I’m looking to follow more creators and developers on the Fediverse who are passionate about open-source, privacy-first software, and system tinkering.

I spend most of my time working within the Android development stack, building local-first/offline-first applications, running Arch Linux, and messing around with low-level Android rooting and custom kernels.

Let's follow each other!

After many months of design, development, gathering feedback, and testing, today we’re releasing a big update with Mastodon 4.6. The headliner of this release is Collections, a way to create and share curated collections of profiles. Part of Mastodon’s work ethos is our commitment to trust and safety, so we’ve put a lot of thought and care into the design of this feature to avoid some of the pitfalls and abuse people have experienced with similar features on other platforms, while focusing on its primary goal: Helping new users discover more of the Fediverse.

Uploaded a photo to make a post, was uploading another one for another post and it stalled out. Now trying to refresh the page, but it never loads.

I'm able to access mastodon.social from another browser, and from an android app. So doesn't appear that the site is down or its an account level block.

Is there some policy that blocks people uploading things? Can I expect to be unblocked one day?

No notifications (lemmy.world)
submitted 3 months ago by to c/mastodon@lemmy.ml

Hi, everybody. I'm testing the different Mastodon apps to see which I like best. A big issue I've stumbled on is notifications not working in Moshidon, Pachli, and Tusky. They're all set to not be automatically managed power consumption-wise, and the notification options are all set to yes. The official Mastodon app works fine, so I have no idea what could be the issue.

Can anybody help?

Only found them by coincidence ;)

1️⃣ In "/settings/preferences/appearance" under "Advanced settings" you can find the option to "Warn me before posting media without alt text"

You can see the error message I see whenever I forget alttext in the second image hehe

2️⃣ When you post an image with text in it, you can simply use the magic AI feature "Add text from image". It usually works very well!

Alt text: "Screenshot of the warning you get with the warning for missing alt enabled. "Add alt text? Your post contains media without alt text. Adding descriptions helps make your content accessible to more people." Below it are 3 buttons "Cancel" "Post anyway" and "Add alt text"

Alt text: "Screenshot of the alt text window, the option "Add text from image" is circled in red.

This is how that "AI" option described the text of the image I posted: "Describe this for people with visual impairments. 1500 Add text from image"

I've been thinking a lot about the Fediverse ALT issue.

Some people are annoyed by posts without Alttext, & others get reminded¹ to add it.

The core question is: How can we improve accessibility?

Proposal: ☑️ Add a user filter to hide media posts without AltTag ☑️ Reduced engagement on hidden posts would encourage adding Alt text ☑️ People who need accessibility wouldn't have to encounter unlabeled media

If this gets traction, I'll open a Mastodon GitHub issue (maybe on others too?).

I've recently made some updates to the ActivityPub Relay I maintain. This includes a regularly updated list of connected instances for monitoring their status and having an easy way to refer to instances for inquiry. I've also added a relay policy which states instances will be banned for featuring bigoted content or having poor admin/uptime.

I definitely have room for some more Mastodon, Misskey, and Pleroma instances.

The relay server itself is located in the east coast of the United States, but open to all regions.

We just released Mastodon 4.5.6, 4.4.13, and 4.3.19.

These versions contain various bug fixes, including a fix for a moderate security vulnerability.

Full release notes and update instructions are available on the GitHub releases page.

As X could soon be banned in the UK amid sexualised AI images concerns, the obvious beneficiary will be Bluesky (a US public benefit corporation) and not Mastodon (whose software is owned by the German non-profit Mastodon gGmbH, now in the process of moving the project to a new foundation.)

The privacy approach of the microblogging service Bluesky risks being confused with that of the instant messaging app Signal (also based in the US, but run by a Foundation), as they are both led by outspoken women (Jay Graber and Meredith Whittaker) who are frequently covered in the media.

But they are really quite different: direct messages on Bluesky are unencrypted (as they are on Mastodon unfortunately) and the service collects quite a lot of personal data (see section 8B in their privacy policy), uses these data for marketing and “other purposes” (section 10), and shares them with “third-party services” and “business partners” (section 11).

As a European-based service, what is Mastodon doing to be seen (and chosen) as a valid alternative?
