Was able to finally pop an 1100. Got it about a week ago after working various locks for practice. I'm stoked!

Edit: I should clarify, I got the lock a week ago. I just now popped it open 26 July 2026

Thanks to everyone that entertained my question. It seems that without drilling, it would require a seemingly impossible balancing and compression act to slide everything back in.

How do I reassemble a Master Lock 140?

Black Friday was my excuse to finally get some lock picking tools. After trying an acrylic lock and a practice lock, I decided to go after one of the Master Lock 140s that I had laying around.

I was able to get it open with a single pick and then a rake.

Then I tried a comb. I went from "yay it's turning", to "oh, it's really turning", to "uh, oh, it's still turning". 🤣

Not really realizing what was happening until it was too late, I ended up removing the whole cylinder (is that what it's called?) as pins fell out, without paying attention to which pin goes where.

The shackle wasn't actually unlocked at that point, so I fiddle around inside the lock some more and fully unlocked everything.

I assume I inadvertently started the process to rekey the lock, but now what? How do I put everything back together again?

I know the pins are out of order, but I assume short key pins go with the taller parts of the key, so I'm thinking it's something like 1+B, 2+A, 3+C, 4+D. I seems like 5 only fits into #6.

My main questions are: (1) Can I just shove everything, or do I have to worry about whatever it was inside the lock that actually unlocked the shackle? I don't know if it has to be in a certain position or not.

(2) From using the CI practice lock, I assume the process is to put in the key pin, pointy end down, then driver pin, then spring. Is that right?

(3) Do I start from the back (i.e., #6), putting the pins in, pushing the spring down and using the lock body to keep the spring compressed?

(4) Related to (1), does the cylinder need to go in at a certain orientation (or avoid a certain orientation?

(5) Finally, what is the correct pin order if I want to keep using that same key? Was my guess correct, 1B, 2 A or C, 3 A or C, 4D?

Left is what I've picked so far, right is a batch off eBay. They're proving tricky so far. I'm trying top-of-the-keyway tension, getting a number of sets, but haven't gotten any open. Videos online show spool pins for the Master locks.

I borrowed this pick from a friend and I love this thing so much. What kind is it so I can get one of my own?

It's Brinks, so it falls apart if you look at it funny. Still proud of this shitty little pick and wrench. I made them out of a busted windshield wiper and a couple metal files on my lunch break at work

Got this at an consignment shop for $15. Anything tricky inside that I should know about before trying to pick? Already have to figure out how to navigate that keyway...

I've picked a master lock (3 I believe). I also picked all the little cylinders that came with the lockpicks I ordered. Sparrow progressive. I even respinned one... Mostly due to accident.

Where do I get more locks? I think I just need the cylinders. What are these called? Where do I buy them from? I'm mostly looking for cheap and they don't have to have a practical purpose. I'm just wanting to pick them for kicks.

I picked my first lock today. It was a cylinder from a Yale deadbolt that I lost the keys to. I'm so pumped. I sat there for over an hour and finally watched a video to learn the pins are little pistons in Yales. I modified the pressure and approach and bam. It just clicked. Cylinder is now repinned to match my current Yale key. Wish I could cut my own keys. Then I'd be a full turkey service (ha... get it). I told my 12 year old who was making fun of me while I was doing it and she actually looked happy for me when I ran in and told her. She even let me show her how a cylinder and key are pinned.

Took some time to find an angle/twist that worked but after getting it nailed down it was easy.

I'm new to the hobby, but already know that this is something I can really get into.

I have purchased a cheap (but good) Chinese set, and want to "upgrade" to something nicer + aquire some more single picks.

I am ready to throw in around €140 (+/-) for a better quality set, but I'm having a really hard time with finding any EU shops that sell picks that are well-reviewed by the community.

I hear Peterson picks are some of the best. Also Sparrows I feel like I hear a lot of people talk about.

That said, I'm not against purchasing outside the EU, but do know that everything will have added + 25% VAT + (usually) expensive shipping + If I exceed ~€150 for the set (not including shipping) I will have to pay 12% of the total amount (shipping included)

I will listen to all types advise, including being pointed to other forums

Almost all of my own padlocks have been picked, save for just two, the ABUS 64TI/40 and the Master lock LOTO. Still relatively new to the tubular lock game, so the yellow Urban bike disk brake lock as also eluded me.

I found getting the two cut away locks helped immensely - the American helped me really hone in on how over setting pins feel, and the Sparrow (after disassembling and putting in some of their advanced driver pins) showed how I was accidentally picking more than one pin with my older/bad technique.

If anyone has suggestions for the Titanium or LOTO locks, I'm all ears!

This is the part that I mentioned in the previous post.

Looked inside and I think it's only missing a little pin or "key" to stop part of it from over tightening. Will post another picture of what I mean.
