Not long ago, I ran pkgbasify on a FreeBSD 15.0 jail – this time I’m going to do it slightly differently. I’m going to run the script on the host.

This year, I had the great privilege of receiving the FreeBSD Foundation travel grant to attend BSDCan.

The June 2026 FreeBSD DevSummit & BSDCan was again successfully recorded and streamed through longtime streaming sponsor ScaleEngine. The requested DevSummit 2 question microphone system kept our running around to a minimum and fit the two rows of DMS1160. We got to see CheriBSD hardware again, in fact, Brooks Davis presented from a CheriBSD box. This year, the DevSummit focused more on AI integration than in previous years. Community member Warner Losh, in particular, gave an interesting talk about how he has used AI to help resolve an issue he was facing. I will refer you to the video posted to the FreeBSD YouTube channel for more details.

I’m really grateful to the FreeBSD Foundation for sponsoring my trip to BSDCan 2026 in Ottawa. The conference ran for four days — two days of DevSummit, then two days of the main conference, with many interesting talks throughout. For me, it’s mainly a chance to talk with developers I don’t otherwise get to reach in day-to-day work. This was my third time attending, and I was happy to be back again.

During BSDCan, the FreeBSD Foundation holds its annual meeting and Board elections. Following this year’s meeting, we are pleased to welcome Dave Cottlehuber to the FreeBSD Foundation Board of Directors. I decided that Thursday morning at 8:27 AM was the right time to start my first update from FreeBSD 15.0 to 15.1 – all my hosts are now on pkgbase. I used the pgkbasify script. Now it’s time to update again.

The FreeBSD Foundation's Laptop Support and Usability Project, which has received more than $750k USD in funding to improve the experience of FreeBSD on laptops, is out with its newest monthly progress report. As of this past week in the FreeBSD source tree for FreeBSD 16, the last of the GNU GPL licensed code from the base system has been retired.

Today I will share how to install and setup a GitLab server on FreeBSD. Most people just use Microslopft GitHub these days but this approach has one big drawback – its cloud only solution. When it comes to on premise solutions there are GitLab and there is also Gitea. GitLab is closest to what GitHub provides while Gitea is very light and smaller brother trying to achieve the same goals by doing less. Good to have alternatives.

My work at $DAYJOB that involves a lot of work with data pipeline these days. Particularly the design of new and better ones, which help us serve users with better data (more advanced processing, better cartographic decisions, etc.).

Yesterday, I modified r730-01 by Running pkgbasify on FreeBSD 15.0 – as a consequence, my log collecting jail was offline. Did it miss any logs?

At BSDCan 2026, I attended the pkgbase in Production: A Practical Overview talk. What impressed me was the ease with which one could upgrade from 15.0 to 15.1 etc. Included in the demonstration was pkgbasify (“Automatically convert a FreeBSD system to use pkgbase”).

Today – which is 2026/06/19 – is another anniversary of FreeBSD Day. Because of that kinda special ‘holiday’ I also prepared something special … FreeBSD project slowly…

This is my FreeBSD music collection. It consists of songs inspired by FreeBSD releases, experiments, and desktop and server experiences that have become part of everyday life. It was built using Suno AI and then tweaked and polished each one.

The tl;dr is to check if you're using 13.0-15.0 and if sysctl kern.ipc.mb_use_ext_pgs returns 1. If you do, the hot mitigation is sysctl -w kern.ipc.mb_use_ext_pgs=0.

Graphics support in FreeBSD has reached a milestone with the drm-kmod port now including the Linux 6.12 (LTS) graphics driver. This version of the port works with FreeBSD 15.1 onwards. The update marks an important upgrade in graphics in both functionality and security because it means that new versions of FreeBSD now benefit from sharing drivers with a newer LTS (Long Term Support) version of Linux. 6.12 is also the newest available version that is targeted for SLTS (super long term support) to 2036 via the CIP program.

The FreeBSD Foundation has launched its AI-assisted Vulnerability Discovery Project with the key goal of reducing the number of exploitable vulnerabilities in the FreeBSD source code. The 6-month project is being funded by a grant from the Alpha Omega project. The funds will be used to engage FreeBSD Security Team members under fixed-term contracts to find and patch vulnerabilities. The Security Team’s access to publicly available AI models and tokens will be provided free of charge. AI will be used for vulnerability discovery and analysis only, all patches will be manually created.

FreeBSD Day, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the launch of the FreeBSD open source operating system and recognizes its pioneering and continued impact on technology.
