I consistently have abysmal sleep battery consumption on my Framework 13. How can I improve this. I'm so sad my laptop is constantly out of battery whenever i grab it.

Anyone knows how to fix this? It's been a problem for the entire year I had the pc now. I've been waiting for firmware updates to hopefully fix it, but nothing has changed for the past year and i feel it's only gotten worse.

My old laptop (also bought used) started to break down, so I had to get a new one.

I always wanted to get a Framework, preferably refurbished to save costs and for sustainability, and found someone nearby selling one.

He basically bought the almost best model two years ago, and never used it. So, the device is basically new, and only cost 1000€. 64 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, and even 4 extra modules (ethernet, 250 GB storage expansion, and some basic ones) included. Absolute steal! 💪

The whole thing feels really premium. The trackpad and keyboard are the best ones I've used so far. And the fingerprint sensor feature is really really handy.

And besides that, it's amazing that I don't have to wait 10 seconds for YouTube videos to pause anymore. Now, I even see the small animations/ transitions KDE has to offer, and loading times are minimal. The performance feels like a breath of fresh air compared to the old one.

The only tiny negative thing I could find is the display. It's only "standard", not great. Once I've got some money I will probably upgrade to the Pro display for higher refresh rate, touch and better colour accuracy in a few years. Or not, I don't know if that's even worth it for me. But the 3:2 aspect ratio is superb compared to the 16:9 I had before. Almost same size, but way more screen estate.

I installed Aurora Linux on it. Everything just works without any tweaking necessary.

For someone who never had a MacBook, this whole thing feels like one I guess, but in a good way. Both the software and the hardware are premium, and it's a very well rounded device.

I'm curious how many people would prefer a more durable/thinkpad-like framework laptop. I get they're trying to go for the more popular/mainstream light/thin/pretty design but man I still like using my T530 over my FW13. I've seen posts like "set my bag down a little too fast and bent/had to replace my hinge" and whatever. i still think the Framework is the best laptop currently being made and would still recommend it and do recommend it to my friends. Obviously some people like the weight and see it as worth the trade-off. but dang i wish there were a beefier one, I dont think we're going to see "framework on the international space station" posts at this rate.

I've had a framework part fail after about 110 days.

The display works when warmed for 30-40 minutes and shows lines when starting from cold.

Franework support opened troubleshooting by saying I have no warranty.

I'm continuing to go through the troubleshooting steps but it happens in multiple OSs and I've already been told if it's determined I need a replacement part it'll be me paying for it.

Has anyone had experience of Franework support refusing or granting warranty on new parts that fail quickly?

EDIT: I've just received an apology and clarification that the display is within warranty after all.

For those who would only want/need to upgrade their Framework 13 Classic input cover to the Pro one for the haptic trackpad, what looks would you choose?

• Silver for a stealth upgrade, monochrome all the way
• graphite for that classic XPS13 look, silver on the outside, black on the inside
• Fuck it I'm doing a full external upgrade, matte black everything

I got my 13 a few months ago and it kind of sucks if I waited I could have gotten the 13 pro instead. However I won't throw it all away or sell it to buy the pro even though I could. I'm planning on upgrading one part a year (or whenever they break), starting with the keyboard cover, to get to the pro. What are your plans?

As I have said before, I have been gifted Framework 12 LT (13th Gen. Intel Core), but I hate tablet sized screens. Is there any way to get Framework working on a LT sized Screen?
My last Dell Screen/monitor was 15” Length X 9” Width, that for me is a normal LT sized Screen/monitor.
Is my only option to return & spend extra amount money to upgrade to a bigger screened Framework LT? That case I do not have that sort of money, guess just keep the ridiculous tablet sized screens.

I do not understand why if Framework ships to my location or not matters (to finding a way to have a bigger than tablet sized screen/monitor), but yes, all major shipping companies will deliver to my home.

I have never done a Pre-release before, when should I expect this to ship?

I finally got around to installing a left justified, 3D printed palm rest for the touchpad.

My printer isn't big enough so I paid a local service and it came out great. I chose black PLA with a textured look and feel. It took about 10 minutes to swap and install. On first boot, the touchpad didn't work but after taking it apart and trying again, no problems.

If Framework or a third party offered a single piece, aluminum or magnesium part, I would be first in line to buy it but for now, this works really well.

Please note that this is my experience and my opinion and mine only. Yours might differ and I'm glad about it because it means that this product reached its intended target

TL;DR: The FW16 is a better computer, but the FW13 is a better laptop

Long read:
I've had a FrameWork 16 for over a year and a half now. I've preordered it as soon as I was aware it existed. I lived it as a computer.
It's the most incredible laptop I've ever seen. Want a numpad? Want no numpad? Want a discrete GPU? Want 16 or 96Gb of RAM? Want one, two, four SSDs? Want six modular ports? First party Linux support? They got you covered.
However, I've grown dissatisfied of this laptop pretty quickly despite wanting to love it so much. I love the modular concept, I love the idea of it, but I ended up not using it, at all. I don't want a numpad, I don't need or want several SSDs or a dGPU. And most of all, I find it highly impractical.

It's so massive. I've never had a gaming laptop, only thin an light laptops (for their respective eras). It's too large to comfortably fit in most laptop backpacks, too heavy and pointy to comfortably lug around all day. Even if the modular plates around the keyboard and trackpad are well made and in reality as solid as you would reasonably expect for a touchable surface, slights imperfections can make it uncomfortable when used as a laptop and give a (false) impression of flimsiness. I ended up keeping it docked most of the time, which defeats the purpose of a laptop.

The raw CPU power is very nice, and the large case and multiple fans insure good thermals. But if I need massive raw power at my desk, I have my gaming PC.

The screen is huge and comfortable and super smooth, but as it's docked, it just becomes a larger than average secondary screen.

The 6 expansion ports are great because that's enough to have most ports basically permanently fixed on the laptop, without having to swap depending on use cases. Yet, being docked to a KVM, I have enough external ports already.

The battery is huge, but yet again, you guessed it, docked, no use, still the same pattern.

Therefore I decided that, as great as it is, the Framework 16 was not for me. It doesn't fit my use case.

And that's why I "downgraded" to the Laptop 13. After a few hours playing with it, I much prefer it as a laptop. It's almost half the weight, fits basically anywhere, its rounded edges and unibody top cover are much more comfortable. It feels more... refined. Like a MacBook Pro from 10-15 years ago (before they became shit with their super slim, uncomfortable and unrepairable keyboards). Being their fisrt and most developed platform, most hardware updates hit the 13 before anything else.

Of course, it's much more limited. The 4 expansion slots are nearly not enough for me but I would only need to swap on the go. Thermals are much more constrained and the CPU less powerful (I went with the 7x40u because the AI300 series don't seem Linux-ready yet). The screen is obviously much smaller. It's not nearly as modular. The battery is 20%-ish smaller.

And I don't care. This is the laptop I wanted all along. A slim, lightweight, repairable, upgradeable laptop I can throw in a bag, dock in my "home office", bring along on the couch, in bed, on vacation or on the weekends.

It boots into a special mode to walk you through completing the assembly. The screen updates to reflect your progress and prompt the next step. This requires no tools to complete. Impressive! See linked video.

This is more of a PSA than anything else. I was warned that the stock Wi-Fi card in the FW13 was problematic with certain routers. Thus far I hadn't had any issues with it, it's worked with every router I've used it on, no issues.

I recently set up starlink for a family member, and while testing it I kept having issues with my framework. I thought the starlink was crapping out, but my phone was fine on the same Wi-Fi. Then I realized that every time it quit working, I could get it to work again by power cycling the Wi-Fi in the framework. It would instantly work again.

It was failing every few minutes it felt like, though I didn't get empirical with it.

For reference, I've got the 7840u, running Bluefin. And the starlink is a V3.

I think I'm still gonna stick with the stock card rather than upgrading right now. I have no need for Wi-Fi 7 right now, and it works everywhere else I need it to work.

I know pre launch there were issues with the fan noise. I've just bought a 16 and it hits 71db when playing cyberpunk, and still 70 when playing rimworld. I've reached out to support and they didn't have much to offer, (reset bios to defaults, disassemble and ensure nothing stuck in the fan.)

It's virtually silent at idle and even when gaming on battery it's not very loud. Has anyone figured out a better fan solution?

EDIT: I've discovered the project fw-fanctrl. I made a custom profile that doesn't do much until the cpu hits higher temps then ramps to max much later. Will see how that works. I might post my profile if it works well enough.

EDIT2: It occurred to me, some of you all might be interested in what I did. Here is the step by step I think. I'm on Fedora 42 so you might need to do something more for your OS and I might have missed a step in my notes. I added a profile that doesn't do much until 75C and ramps to 100% at 95C. I just played a game of Beyond all reason and I'm pretty sure it never got to 85C even.

First clone the repo:

If you have a Framework 13 AMD and suffer from graphic artifacts, page faults on Linux (in my case Manjaro), a downgrade of mesa to 24.3.4 might help:

Seriously, what on earth is going on? They're releasing a whole new laptop and have given the FL13 Ryzen AI options but there's nothing new for the FL16. I'm hoping for a 2nd gen dGPU before I would get mine (or even a Zen 5 CPU, but I am OK with a Zen 4 as of now) but it seriously feels like there's no progress on that front. The last thing they made for the FL16 was the Dual M.2 and that was in December. Will there be new parts for the FL16? When? If not, will there be another dGPU laptop offering?

Just want to add to the chorus, framework is awesome. This thing is so sleek and fancy.

There were a couple of hiccups with the DIY build. An out of position Wi-Fi wire on the hinge, and I wasn't told to plug it in before turning it on, so I thought I had a dud for a minute or two. But that's no big deal.

It was the deal that got me, I went with a 7840u, with the 2.8k screen. I bought my own ram, and reused a 2230 512gb nvme from when I upgraded my steam deck. That'll hold me over until I decide I need more 🤷‍♂️

It's only been a few days but so far I couldn't be happier!

Gotta stop myself from fidgeting with the bezel magnets, it's fun but I'm gonna break it 😬

Edit: Forgot to mention I'm running Bluefin, based on recommendations here. My first time with Fedora, and immutable/atomic based distros. I'm used to Debian based stuff. So far I haven't run into too much trouble. Though I AM struggling with my virtual machine.

I have three apps that I need Windows for still, there is no replacement. One of them might run in proton, but it's updated regularly, and interfaces with a shared database, and I'm just not willing to be the fly in the ointment if my setup breaks something for everyone.

The other is a Windows store exclusive, and that doesn't work with proton.

And the third I could find an alternative for, I just... It will be a lot of work converting the database over, and I don't want to right now 🤷‍♂️

Anywho the problem is the VM, Boxes, won't run in full resolution. It's locked at a lower resolution. Seems like a crazy problem, a feature that should already be baked in. I've tried SPICE virt-viewer, per some guides, but no dice.

I've got a thread up here about it if anyone has an idea? I know there's at least a few bluefin users here.
