By the total number of edits made, CoMaps was the 15th most used #OpenStreetMap editor in June.

At first glance, that might not sound like a lot, but: With that, we are the #1 OSM editor that is not mainly an editor but a fully fledged map & navigation app and also editor!

From the start we have said that we want CoMaps to be a good citizen of the larger OSM ecosystem and make sure that we and our users contribute back. And it looks like you're all making good on that!

I recently saw this community pop up on All and checked it out a bit, but was wondering why CoMaps?

I’ve seen other Open Street Map projects such as Organic Maps and OsmAnd. What sets this project apart from others?

Hoping someone here knows more about this or can point me in the right direction.

Did you know: CoMaps is the new default map/navigation app in #CalyxOS! Since the 7.2.1.0 test build of May, CoMaps helps CalyxOS users get around!

Read more about the CalyxOS default apps here: https://calyxos.org/features/list/#bundled-apps

Searching comaps gets two top results looking the same. One is roughly 50mb and the other is in the 60s. The larger os Fdroid hosted and the other Izzyondroid.

What is the difference, which should I get?

Are there any options to include eircodes in CoMaps or Open Street Maps?

Or is there a way for users to download and add them into it themselves?

In Ireland Eircodes are relatively new, being launched around 10 years ago, but only very recently many people, mainly businesses - only give out an eircode as I found out on a recent trip. When I entered the eircode into CoMaps it can't find anything, no option for 'route to' etc.

So what I have had to do at least three times while I was over there (only for two days) was look up g00gle maps online, and then copy the coordinates into CoMaps. I found that the easiest/fastest way, but I can only imagine if I had been there for longer - which I will be soon, - I would have a never ending pain in my neck having to do that every single time.

TIA.

EDIT - Would this be any good? https://github.com/hmleal/irish-eircode-dataset (I don't think there is anything there).

Venezuela was hit by two devastating earthquakes, affecting thousands. Our local contributor Anton is not just safe but supports rescue efforts. If you want to financially help, you can do so here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/emergencia-venezuela-equipos-para-rescatistas-terremoto

And if you're an experienced #OpenStreetMap contributor, you can help by mapping to remotely support the disaster response: https://tasks.hotosm.org/explore?campaign=2026+Venezuela+Earthquake

Organic Maps has a useful new Public Transit feature now. I really hope the CoMaps community will develop something similar soon. Video

Today we are celebrating our first birthday! 🍰🎈

As it's been a very busy year – full of new community members, new features, and more – we've written up a summary of all the things that have happened.

And to give all of you a small gift: If you press the Check Updates button in the 2026.05.06 version of CoMaps, you'll find some freshly updated maps that were quietly released for you yesterday!

17

Release 2026.05.06 is out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS, and soon on Google Play and brings a big new feature:

From this version onward, updating the map files of CoMaps is no longer tied to updating the app. Which means we can bring you fresh OpenStreetMap based maps more often!

Read more about it on our website: https://www.comaps.app/news/2026-05-06/Release-2026.05.06-release-notes/

Making an app like CoMaps does not just mean developing new features. It also requires ongoing work to make sure we don't accumulate technical debt and stay future proof. On our blog, contributor Jean-Baptiste outlines what work we've already done!

On May 12, CoMaps is turning one year old and, to celebrate with our community, we'll hold a little virtual birthday party to which everyone is invited that day at 19:00 UTC! We'll share a bit of how CoMaps as a community, project and app has been doing, but mostly want to give some space to get to know each other!

Find all the details here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/wiki/First-anniversary-celebrations

To make sure the iOS version of CoMaps does not fall too much behind the Android version, we need more iOS contributors.

Which is why we'd love to onboard more iOS devs! If you're interested in contributing on that front, get in touch on Zulip, we're always eager to help people get started in contributing! Find us here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/src/branch/main/docs/CONTRIBUTING.md#team-messaging

Release 2026.04.23 is now out on all channels. Beyond fresh maps from #OpenStreetMap data, the Android version now allows changing the app interface language and toggling between the next stop and final destination of your turn-by-turn navigation! Full release notes are here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/releases/tag/v2026.04.23-19

Did you know that you can use CoMaps to explore the world or plan your next trip on a bigger screen if you have a device with Samsung DeX? It allows you to turn your phone into a desktop: browse maps, discover interesting places, and plan future road trips with a full-screen setup and split-screen support.

Heya,

I'm trying to go through Europe in Co-Maps. Particularly, I want to use offline maps to avoid aggressive roaming fees during one part of my route, as well as have a robust backup if online maps breaks. This seems to work great in preparation so far.

One thing I'd like to account for, is that driving through Switzerland is very expensive. I would rather want to detour slithly south through Austria, but I can't find a good way to communicate that to the app. I could try with some intermediary stops, but that seems like it would muddy the routing algorithm even more.

Is there a way to prefer/avoid areas or countries? Or a way to prepare a fitting route externally in advance, then reliably have it work in the app?

Thanks in advance.

We have recently received a trust score by 9.6 out of 10 from "European & Open Source Alternatives", a website that wants to help people find trustworthy alternatives to Big Tech.

With that stellar rating, we are currently the top-rated alternative in the Maps category, side-by-side with our friends from #OpenStreetMap ❤️

CoMaps will join tomorrow's edition of #HOTOSM monthly "Open Technology & Innovation" call, to chat a bit about what CoMaps is, our history and also how recent features like the custom map hosting (and more upcoming features!) might be relevant for humanitarian use.

The event happens on Tuesday, 14th of April at 18:00 UTC. If you want to join us, you can register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfubWqrXuJh4GgLfbU0qPH-J_dKRfjpP_rG-r5r4miu6pf-fA/viewform
