A day or two ago I accidentally stumbled upon PieFed and the Fediverse at large. How? I was looking for a way to read Reddit posts in a private browser while using a VPN (without having to sign in). I couldn't find anything helpful, but I did start to get suggestions for alternatives to Reddit. Reading through those I saw talk of Lemmy which led me to start reading up on the ActivityPub protocol, and on and on from there.

The whole multi-connected aspect of the Fediverse feels a lot closer (to me) to the world wide web of the future that was sold to us during the 90's/early 00's than the mega walled gardens that we ended up with. So, I deleted my Reddit account and signed up here. That might seem rash, but I was already pretty tired of Reddit.

-PS: To celebrate the reminder of the late 90's/early 00's I'm listening to some "Old" Nu Metal (P.O.D., Korn, System of a Down, Puddle of Mudd). What, if anything, are y'all listening to?

I’ve just moved over from Reddit after a pretty rough experience there. I’m looking for a friendlier space and would love any tips on how to integrate quickly and make the most of this community.

I was a user of Apollo, arguably the best iOS client for Reddit (I have since moved to Android). The 2023 drama was bad. I considered moving off Reddit, but didn't want to delete my account there, it's too useful, given the scale of that website. I learned about Lemmy at the time, but during my research saw some controversy (yeah, those political themes, tankies, etc.). I lived in a communist country as a kid. That drove me off of Lemmy and in the end I didn't create an account. I subbed for Tildes, which technically is not a Reddit alternative, but kinda is :) I didn't stick long. I stayed on Reddit, I even think the current version of their mobile app is not bad. Maybe not on Apollo's level, but it's OK. Though they serve many more ads nowadays. I somehow found myself on PieFed a few weeks ago, read about it and liked the technical side of things, the feature list, its functionality. I decided to give it a try. I installed Interstellar on my phone, but it has some rough edges, I installed Boost, but immediately uninstalled (ad-sponsored, I get it, but it's not something I want), then Voyager, which AFAIK is a client for Lemmy, but added support for PieFed not that long ago. This is the closest to Apollo for Reddit, in my opinion. I already like that app a lot. PieFed on the web is great, too. Like a fresher version of old Reddit with QoL and more modern design. It's nice being here. There's not a lot of going on, which is not bad per se, but I have a problem with craving those dopamine hits (who doesn't? :( ) and keep visiting and refreshing. I should get away from that, so the lower volume of new posts on the Fediverse could actually help.

I posted a few posts here and there (I guess mostly on Lemmy communities, which is ironic in context of what I typed above) and some even became popular.

I guess I'll stay.

I wish to create a community based on a language which hasn't been listed, yet it's the 7th largest spoken language according to Google. I wish to give people an experience "away from facebook". The community (group) would be such that only members can post photos. Anybody can comment on them though. How to create such a group/community ??

Hey all, happy to be exploring piefed and all it has to offer. I like to write erotic fiction as a hobby, and posting that content on reddit doesn't sit well with me (you know, AI and corporate overlords).

Anyway, so far so good here. I like the vibe even though the community isn't as robust as something like pixelfed or mastodon.

Deciding my remaining on Reddit features continuous degradation of my time, I decided to pin my modest hopes on here -- and into the fediverse at large. How is everyone holding up so far? My past few weeks weren't anything to write home about; neither is the bombarding existential horrors this world seems to spell out to us; it's written all over the internet, after all. What can be said for your personal developments? I've been learning how to drive today. A tad nerve wracking, no doubt. I handled the procedure better than a few years ago.

Hello other newcomers! It’s been decades since I’ve participated in open source discussions/forums. So fun! I joined the fediverse the other day but decided to try out PieFed on several recommendations from Reddit users.

I have been trying to make my phone dumb, not be tracked by advertisers or surveilled by government, increase digital privacy and get off of big, addictive social media with mindless scrolling & algorithms.

I hope to install Linux Mint on an old computer soon. I’m not very tech savvy and old, so for tech purposes, I’m going to try using AI to install Linux and hopefully to try out self-hosting, eventually. Seems like a better use of my time than doomscrolling! I don’t want to use AI and will avoid it for frivolous or personal uses because it goes against my environmental morals. My spouse says AI may become less energy, resource intensive in the future. Hopefully so. But for now I don’t want to use it unless I have no other options.

I look forward to more interactions as this noobie learns more. Thank you for this platform.

Hello together! I finally decided to make the move and join the fediverse. I did my reading yesterday and decided to join this instance here. I'm still a little bit overwhelmed by how things work in the fediverse but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon.

I decided to visit and join some communities already but I'm still trying to discover more communities that appeal to my interests. So far, most recommended communities I stumbled upon were very meme heavy. I have nothing against that, but I'm also looking for more in-depth communities themed around discussions of history, music, and/or geopolitics. Any suggestions are welcome..

What I still don't understand is that I found so many different communities simply titled c/music but I think they are just on different instances, right?
