So I was asked to write something to sign up here and I wrote a little story inspired by "the grasshopper and the squirrel". It's a bit rough around the edges since I just typed more-or-less stream of conciousness style. May not be used to train AI!

Pepper and the sunset

In the sleepy village of Pine Hollow most animals dutifully return to their homes when the sun becomes orange. The hares to their burrows, the foxes to their dens, the squirrels to their nests. But not Pepper the Skunk who would climb the nearby hill to draw the colorful sunset.

Evening after evening she would draw and color the sunset in her notebook. This baffled the other animals and they asked why she would do this. They understood the urge to paint something beautiful but surely the novelty would wear out fast.

"Not every sunset is the same" answered Pepper "Who knows if tomorrows sunset will be strawberry jam colored with clouds like whipped cream or or more like a fresh slice of an orange with purple cotton candy?"

Pepper would usually wake up later than the rest who were already busy and had a harder time finding food to stock up for the winter. This baffled the other animals and some secretly expressed worries that they would be expected to share their hard earned stocks for the winter with Pepper who had her "Head in the clouds" as they would say.

Come winter a quietness settled over Pine Hollow. The bigger animals would hibernate, the smaller ones would sleep a lot and occasionally venture out to their stocks. As the days dragged on however their stocks grew smaller and the village elders organised aid for animals whos stock had rotten, got found by birds or who otherwise had issue finding enough to eat. These made for gloomy meetings in the villages main burrow where the tired animals would grumpily help one another. Some gave freely, some just gave so the whole affair would be over faster and they could return to their burrows.

It wasn't long until some animals started moaning about the lack of sun and how they wish spring would finally come and they could see the sun again. Despair was beginning to set in and some even said they couldn't remember what the sun looked like. It was Pepper then, who had come to rely on some of the aid as well, who came in early for the next meeting and set up her drawings of the sun. Yellow suns in a blue sky, orange suns sinking into clouds, red suns angrily trying to peek through the clouds to get a last glimpse of Pine Hollow.

When the other animals entered there were sounds of amazement and sighs of relief. Some animals just sat in front of one of the paintings and stare at it. Soon the animals of Pine Hollow had a glimmer of hope that the winter would soon be over and they would be able to play outside and eat fresh food and berries. They thanked Pepper for keeping such a rich stock of the sunlight to help them keep heart through the cold and cloudy winter days.

This is my first-ever post on Lemmy/the Fediverse. I've just arrived here after being banned from, and ultimately quitting, Reddit; I was on there for 6 years, so I'm essentially starting social media over again. I was told that Lemmy was the closest alternate to Reddit out there, yet I'm still not entirely sure how this works.

A bit about me: I'm 24 years old, I live in Reston, Virginia (US), I'm near the end of an IT degree at George Mason University, and I am on the autism spectrum (Asperger's syndrome, to be precise). I enjoy literature, gaming (in particular FromSoftware games), and am starting to get really into AI (Claude in particular). Being from the Washington DC area, I also enjoy a good bit of political conversation (center-right/libertarian overall, LibCenter/LibRight on the compass). My father being ex-USAF, I also enjoy discussing geopolitics and military/defense matters.

I came to this particular server/instance/super-community/whatever-this-place-is, and to Lemmy overall, via the Voyager IOS app (it was the first thing that came up in the app store), though I'm making this post on desktop, as it seems Voyager doesn't allow the option, that I can see, to make posts in the first place. As a former Redditor, I'd like some advice as to...well...what to DO to make the most of this social network.

3 years ago today Lemmy.zip was created, and what a journey it has been!

I never thought it would grow beyond a few users, and that it would probably crash and burn after I inevitably broke something.

Amazingly, we're still here and now the 3rd most active Lemmy server!

Server updates

DotZip turns 3 years old on June 10th! To be more precise, Lemmy.zip turns 3 years old but we're gonna use that as our official birthday across our sites. Piefed.zip turns 1 year old just 3 days later, so it's close enough we'll use it as our birthday date :)

We'll have some birthday celebrations taking place, plus a cool little mini-site (we had these in Year 1 and Year 2 so we'll keep the tradition going, although it will be slightly different this year!

Piefed took its turn at being the problem-instance for once, and caused some major headaches. Very unlike Piefed, which is normally the well behaved child instance.

A user disclosed publicly some vulnerabilities in Piefed that could be exploited, into a lemmy community without notifying the developer first of this. As this could then be used by anyone to exploit piefed instances, a number of Piefed admins including us took our Piefed instances offline until the fixes could be pushed. During this time, some further exploits were shared which indicated that the instance needed to stay offline longer, including the ability for any account to ban any other account without authentication. As this could be used to target vulnerable users, we held Piefed.zip offline a bit longer until these fixes were pushed too.

Thankfully all fixes were pushed in about 24 hours, and the site is back up, but it does show the impact on instances when disclosures are made improperly. The vulnerabilities were also all discovered by having an LLM scan the codebase, which probably indicates where we're at as a society right now, and that anyone developing code probably needs to do this to make sure someone doesn't beat them to it.

Thankfully it doesn't appear any real damage was done!

After last month's Lemmy drama with nested comments, Lemmy.zip has taken its turn being well behaved and I don't have too much to say here. The Lemmy 1.0 beta is out and in testing, so hopefully not too long before we're able to upgrade and get all the cool new features.

So the thing is that in when I'm about to make a new post, on the top, search bar, where the text is, it's moving to fast, that causes my broswer lag.

This was before the update and happened again in my previous post. Anyone else had the same bug/thing?

Hello, I was trying to login to b.piefed.zip since I used to use blorp on my old instance before i switched here, but i'm not able to login on my vpn, and if i turn off my vpn, login, then turn it back on, posts won't load. This seems to also be an issue trying to login from blorpblorp.xyz. It doesn't seem like this instance blocks vpns as I was able to login via piefed ui and the Blorp android app over my vpn with no issues and everything is loading just fine. I also apologise if this is the wrong place to post since this looks to be the lemmy.zip discussion place, but i can't find one for piefed.zip.

Hello all!

I have been solidly ill for about 2 months, but I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. To that end, I am able to actually write some stuff this month, instead of last month's phone-it-in excuse of an update. And what a month its been!

To add to that, next month (June 10th) is Lemmy.zip's 3rd Birthday! If Lemmy.zip were a small child, it would apparently be able to ride a tricycle. How about that eh. Anywho, keep an eye out for our birthday celebrations :)

Server Updates

Status Page Updates

First, we have a new status page coming! It may already be in place by the time you read this. Currently we've been using Betterstack for the status page, but it has a limited number of sites we can monitor. We could use UptimeKuma, but I've never liked the style of it. Anyway we've swapped now, and the status page will be hosted at status.dotzip.ltd but all the sites we run will have status subdomains redirecting here, i.e. status.lemmy.zip will redirect there.

All our services can be documented on that page now, for a full picture of our infrastructure.

The Button

Season 3 of The Button starts very soon - 20:00 UTC on Monday 4th May (thats like, 2 days away!)

Originally it was just meant to be an April Fools joke but due to popular demand it keeps coming back.

Piefed.zip has been relatively stable for the past month. That's how I like my services :)

Let's start with the performance issues. It kind of ties up everything that's been happening this month on lemmy.zip nicely.

A little while ago, Lemmy version 0.19.16 was released. This introduced some database pooling/timeout changes, and as many of these things can do, this had the knock on effect of uncovering a previous bug with nested comments, which had managed to hide away.

Ultimately, deeply nested comment threads would cause lemmy to recursively process the whole comment chain until this caused a timeout in the software and a stack overflow of that process thread, which would lead all the threads becoming overwhelmed and unable to keep up with requests, causing lemmy to eventually restart. It becomes a bit of a federation death spiral:

• An instance sends deeply nested comments
• Lemmy recursively processes it
• Workers get tied up
• Queue fills
• New tasks can’t start
• Eventually → crash

This became apparent with the log line:

Timeout occurred while waiting for a slot to become available

Unfortunately, no amount of config tweaking could resolve this one.

For example, the above chart shows a 2 day period in early april - each drop is a restart of the server container as it gets timed out by a comment thread. Each time a new comment was posted, it caused the whole thread to be reprocessed and a new crash. This was exacerbated by the posting habits of some users on certain communities posting lots of deeply nested comments very quickly which then caused a loop of crashing and restarting -> next nested comment is processed -> crash and restart and so on. This is why I made the decision to temporarily defederate hexbear, as we'd gone about an hour of trying to process one set of comments in a thread over on Hexbear and it was causing about 10 seconds of uptime -> crash -> restart and so on.

Much more information on the error is available in that linked thread, and the it contains links to the github issue if you're interested in seeing more in depth log errors.

I think there is still more work for the devs to do on the database pooling/timeout issues. This was ultimately two issues interacting to cause the restarts. Deeply nested comments eating up the CPU being recursively processed (fixed), and the added timeout functionality causing this to compound and crash the server.

Moving on to something a bit better, if you're a moderator then you may be interested to know that our ModTools site for Lemmy.zip now allows you to link your own bot account, so instead of all actions coming from ZippyBot, you can use your own community bot!

Just make sure it's set as a moderator in the community. I've been trialing this for a little while in the gaming community with @GamingBot@lemmy.zip.

ModTools is under heavy development, so please do expect bugs and things to not work. I also appreciate feedback on UI/UX and any missing functionality you'd like to see.

I do want to share the sad news that Lemmy.zip lost a member of the communtity recently. @GeekFTW@lemmy.zip and I first got chatting around 2 years ago when he was looking to move the !squaredcircle@lemmy.zip away from it's then-home due to performance issues, and it eventually settled on Lemmy.zip. Since then, I had got used to seeing his name pop up frequently in the local feed. The absence of that name a little while ago was sad, but it was recently confirmed that he had suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.

Lemmy is still a small community, and there are certain usernames you come to recognise and enjoy seeing in your feed. Sadly, we’ve lost one of those names, and I do hope you’ll take a minute to pause and remember the person behind the username. Whether you interacted with him regularly or just recognised his posts in passing, he was part of what made this community feel alive.

Online spaces can sometimes feel transient, but the people in them and the connections they create are very real.

Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and everyone here who felt his presence. He’ll be missed.

We are officially in to March (you probably already knew that). Unfortunately I forgot there were only 28 days and so have had no prep time to come up with anything remotely witty as an opening paragraph, so you're stuck with whatever this sorry excuse of an opening is. Anyway, onwards!

Server Updates

This bit relates to all our services, so I'll put it at the top here!

Two big things - firstly, keep an eye out for April Fools day this year 😜 I've actually put a bit of work in this year so I'm excited.

Secondly, Hetzner who host all our servers are putting up their prices. In all fairness, this is happening across the industry as the demand for RAM soars, and Hetzner have been pretty rock solid in terms of pricing & support over the last 3 years, so I'm not too upset about it. We'll just have to keep an eye on it vs donations over the next 6 months.

After our last server update, we decided to upgrade the server to the next VPS (Virtual Private Server) tier due to the influx of new users. The cost increase at the time was minimal and gave a significant boost to performance. We now have 8 vCPUs and 16GB RAM for Piefed. If we decide to upgrade again, we'll likely swap from a shared VPS set up to a dedicated VPS which should give more consistent performance but does cost that bit more.

I'm always on the look out for Piefed.zip staff to approve new accounts and handle mod reports. If you're a regular Piefed.zip user and would like to help out, please drop me a message!

Thankfully nothing major has happened on Lemmy.zip this month. We're basically in a holding pattern of waiting for the Lemmy devs to release 1.0 so we can do the upgrade and get access to all the new goodies. Hopefully not too long to wait.

I do need to do some updates on the server and the services we run, I'll try and schedule that in the next couple of weeks.

Since enabling the cloudflare challenge across Lemmy.zip we've had no downtime or scraper incidents at all, which has been quite nice!

OK well that's it for now - March is an exciting month for me, not just because April fools is at the end but also because, for anyone who was around a year ago, my child turns 1 year old during this month which is absolutely nuts. Time has flown by so quickly (despite the long, long nights and sleep deprivation).

We're also coming up on Lemmy.zip's third birthday in June (Year one and Year two are both still up!) which is another awesome milestone!

I noticed that when I was on https://lemmy.zip/c/rpgmemes@ttrpg.network and clicked the image on that post to enlarge it, it forced me to a new page https://images.lemmy.zip/pictrs/image/d73bfddb-8062-41a8-bef4-fe22a9b00a83.avif. Most images on https://lemmy.zip/c/rpgmemes@ttrpg.network can be clicked to enlarge and you just stay on https://lemmy.zip/c/rpgmemes@ttrpg.network instead of being taken to a different page for the image. I was wondering what is causing this, since this happened for a few of my recent posts.

I do know that I used Create Post and then hit Browse next to Image to upload the post. This post was .webp.

I also know that I posted https://lemmy.zip/post/59611401 and have a deleted version of it at https://lemmy.zip/post/59611186. I forget which one of these it was, but I started out uploading a .webp and got the same result: no click to enlarge and staying in the community, clicking only leads to a different page. I edited the post with some other filetype, .jpeg, .jpg, or .png. Same result. And because of this I have multiple of the exact same picture littering my Uploads section on my profile and cannot delete the unused ones (I click delete and get the message it succeeded, but no matter what I do I still always have four of that picture in my Uploads section), so now I worry I am wasting Lemmy server storage.

Starting from a few months ago, images don't work on any android clients (Sync, Summit or Jerboa). I would like to get this acc to work again.

Other instances' (.world, nsfw) images load fine. This happens when using or not using a VPN. Images load fine when using alexandrite.

How would I even begin to debug this?

Edit Edit: Android 11 didn't support AVIF codecs, updating to android 12 fixed the issue.

The fog finally broke, and there it was: the end of January.

At this point I was beginning to suspect it had been extended without consultation. Days had started repeating. The same Monday kept turning up in different hats. Even the calendar looked tired of explaining itself.

People spoke of February in hushed, theoretical terms, like a place you might go one day if conditions improved. Some claimed they’d seen sunlight. Others said time was moving forward again, but there was no evidence to support this and these people were rightly ridiculed.

Still, it has arrived. The end of January. The beginning of February. We have made it.

Server Updates

Lemmy.zip

Well January was a fun month. In full "New Year, New Me" mode, the scrapers decided to full on try and take us down in their efforts to steal all the content.

Here is a graph:

Normally, this line should be flat/non existent. The orange is showing how many 502 errors we're seeing, and the purple is when everything gets overwhelmed and we start returning 504 errors and suddenly everyone gets a lovely cloudflare screen as the server screeches to a halt.

Our usual method of dealing with this is working out who is firing all this traffic at us and adding their ASN to the challenge list, which previously has then stopped them in their tracks. However they've likely changed track here, and we were seeing lots of sustained scraping from a whole range of IPs, lots of which were residential, and this left us with really only one choice, which was "challenge everything". So, we did just that.

Can you work out on this graph where we may have implemented that?!

This isn't particularly ideal for any of us but hey, people just can't play nice and we have to do stuff like that to stop us from being overwhelmed. The solve rate (i.e. how many requests are legit) is about 2.75% currently. In our last update we shared a screenshot showing a 0.16% solve rate with about 100k attempts per 24 hours - we're currently seeing 600k attempts every 24 hours, so the magnitude of what we need to deal with keeps going up.

The ability to set, edit, remove etc tag enforcement from your communities is now available on modtools.lemmy.zip.

We have added the Photon front end to Piefed.zip - photon.piefed.zip It's still in beta due to the ever evolving code over on Piefed, but works really well (just like photon for lemmy does!)

We're also going to schedule some downtime on Piefed.zip to upgrade the server. With all the new users (Hello!!) it's starting to push at the seams of suitable performance, so a little bit of extra juice will be on the way. We'll let you all know when that is due to take place.

Piefed has also picked up a bit of attention on Reddit and the like - so if you've come from there, welcome aboard!

Stuff for nerds

If, like me, you really like using the terminal on your arch install (I use arch btw) then you will know just how cumbersome it is having to open a web browser just to browse social media and post your thoughts.

Not so long ago, I stumbled across Stegodon which is an SSH-first federated blogging platform - yes, social media in your terminal.

To that end, I've spun up my own personal project at Stegodon.zip which you can connect to via ssh stegodon.zip - it really is that easy (You will need ssh keys first.. you have ssh keys right??)

I had an eye on the fediverse for a certain time now and have finally decided to make accounts and actually participate. I never used much social media (if you can even call the fediverse that, feels like the word has been ruined) so i guess it's gonna be a bit of a bumpy start but what can you do.

I'm mostly interested in Linux, FOSS and system administration related topics (having the time of my life right now configuring my setup and writing silly scripts for all kinds of stuff) with a novice-level interest in networking and cybersecurity (not that i'm very advanced in the aforementioned topics, lol).

If you've got some good tips on easy to miss communities or just fediverse advice in general, feel free to share, i appreciate it! Glad to be here :)

Hope you've all settled in to the new year, and I have my fingers crossed that this year will be a calmer and more restrained... wait, fuck, well that's gone out the window already hasn't it.

Server Updates

Lemmy.zip

Couple of things - a couple of new Lemmy releases have been applied to the server, namely Lemmy 0.19.4 and Lemmy 0.19.5

These didn't require database migrations, and so were applied quickly in the background with minimal downtime.

We also changed image formats from Webp to AVIF. It doesn't affect previously uploaded images, but for the past month or so new images are in the AVIF format. (Thanks and sorry to app developers who've had to update their apps to support this ❤️).

Mainly we're trying to reduce storage space long term so higher quality compression with small file sizes is a win-win.

The war against scrapes is on-going. Thankfully we've had no large scale attacks this month, but we still challenge around 100k attempts a day:

I'm trying to chip away at adding more tools for mods to use, if there is anything you'd like to see please let me know and I can add it to the list.

Piefed.zip

Piefed underwent some quite significant downtime while I went about tidying up the docker stuff, rebuilt the reverse proxy, and I finally had time to start looking at the future for Piefed.zip.

FediDB lists Piefed.zip as the 4th most active Piefed server which is really cool. Currently it sits quite nicely on a VPS without any real performance issues. It also has Hetzner's really awesome daily backup in place (which has saved my skin many times on Lemmy.zip while that was still on a VPS) so I'm not looking to move it anywhere else just yet. But like Lemmy.zip, if/when we get to that stage, we'll be moving it on to it's own dedicated server.

During the maintenance, we finally updated the images to be served via media.piefed.zip rather than via the horrible backblaze url.

We also swapped over to Nginx as the reverse proxy instead of Traefik. The simplest reason as to why I did this is that I know Nginx, and Traefik was more of an experiment for me at the time. Unfortunately as Piefed gets more popular, I need to look at things like Geoblocking the UK again, which is just easier in Nginx.

There were also general server updates and tweaks. Still some stuff I need to work on as I ran out of time, including managing to break prometheus somehow.

I've been having an issue with images not displaying on lemmy.zip for a while (can't remember if this has been since I joined or not).

I believe it has to do with cloudflare filtering VPNs (I use Mullvad usually on Amsterdam or Dublin).

In the attached image you can see images not showing including the lemmy icon and my avatar.

I need to go to images.lemmy.zip and click the cloudflare challenge to "verify I am human" then go back to my home page and refresh for the images to reappear. I have to do this every 30 minutes.

Everything else on the site works fine so I assume something needs relaxed on images.lemmy.zip specifically?

EDIT:
I don't seem to be able to open images in external browser, it always opens in apps internal browser. I do have external browser selected as default.
I do suspect that it's the lemmy.zip image proxy quirk. The app seems to read that as a lemmy link despite me selecting external browser for the image.

We are still in our Lemmy 1.0 holding pattern, with me too afraid to write any zippy code in case something breaks and I have to go back over that uncommented clusterfuck that I mashed together.

The battle against scrapers continues.

Here's a little screenshot of how much bot traffic we're identifying and challenging vs how many humans get caught up in this:

As you can see, this shows that while some people do get caught up, the rules we've implemented work really well at keeping bots at bay. Mostly.

If you see an error screen it's probably a scraper taking us down :(

We're still keeping Piefed.zip on the dev branch, but we are considering swapping to the next stable version. If you're a Piefed.zip user, thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Development on Piefed is fast, which means you get new features quicker on the dev branch, but also more bugs and quirks.

And there we have it. Another month has passed. The next time I do this, it will be 2026! I reflected 12 months ago that doing this end of year update for a second year was, and I quote, "fucking nuts". As I now do this third time, I am floored by how much things have changed in the space of 12 months, and yet comforted by how many of you I see around Lemmy and have got to know over all of this time. Since I did that post last year, Lemmy.zip has changed into a real not for profit business. What a learning curve that was but monumental in the longevity of this site. We saw the loss of lemm.ee, but this brought many people over to DotZip who've hopefully found a new home. We set up Piefed.zip, which has been steadily growing all this time too!

I want to put out a genuine thank you to everyone who uses one of our sites. None of us are doing this for any reason other than wanting to create the best space possible, free from advertising and tracking, and all of your efforts, whether creating regular posts, moderating communities, or even just the odd upvote, means so much to me. It still excites me seeing a .zip user in the wild :)

I hope you have a lovely and restful period over the end of this year, and that you get to spend time with those that you love.

Hi, I've noticed that bot@lemmit.online has been banned.
Since that account posts all of the content on that instance, this is essentially equivalent to defederating from lemmit.online.
I realize that not everybody likes lemmit.online since it is all just reposts from Reddit, but it seems like it would be preferable to just put it on the default block list instead of banning the content entirely for all users. I personally like being able to read content from Reddit here without having to give Reddit my traffic.
Would it be possible to unban?

I know many of you have been perched on the edge of your seats, waiting tirelessly day and night for some badly-spelled rambling and abstract graph screenshots, wondering if I had, in fact, forgotten about you. Fear not. I have arrived.

Once again, we've been battling some scrapers and investigating the cause. We usually know this is happening because ZippyBot is very sensitive to the API timing out and starts crashing, old.lemmy.zip starts going down frequently, and there's periods of time where the site becomes slow/unresponsive.

This time, we narrowed it down to AS9009, so its gone on the ASN challenge list. It would make my life easier if they just didn't scrape us, but apparently that's too much to ask.

Other than that, things have been relatively stable. We're patiently waiting the release of Lemmy 1.0 and all the goodies that will bring with it. I can feel my blood pressure rising in real time just at the thought of going through the update process and all the stress that brings, but what's the worst that could happen except accidentally triggering a black hole and ending the world.?

We had a slight issue with Piefed.zip where posts accidentally stopped federating for a little bit due to badly timed upgrade, which is the risk of being on the dev branch - thankfully it was an easy fix.

We now have a ZippyBot piefed account too which handles all the new user messages, and will be expanded at some point to handle similar admin-type jobs to Lemmy.zip's zippy bot.

I'm not kidding about the cereal is soup thing, just for the record. I once fell out with someone because I am adamant a piece of bread between two other slices of bread constitutes a bread sandwich.

I had been posting to !runescape@lemmy.zip for a while now from my other accounts when I realized the other day it didn't exist anymore lmao

I assume the most likely reason was that it was unmodded and purged. I made a fresh account over here to make a diff comm today, so I wanted to see if it was restorable before I made a new RuneScape comm
