1. Threadiverse is Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin. Fediverse only accounts for listed software [17], not the other [112] software tracked by Fediverse-Observer.

Note:

• Piefed appears to be having a surge. I imagine the release of piefed v1.7 (released on 2026-07-03) is a significant source of the influx, but the new active users seems to mostly becoming from fedinsfw.app.
• fedinsfw.app saw a 175% Daily Active User (DAU) increase. I guess the "following users" feature is good for porn?
• Some larger (>20 Daily Active User (DAU)) instances saw significant DAU increases since 2 weeks ago (2026-06-29), while others saw slight decreases.
• Increases: piefed.zip (+90%), piefed.ca (+79%), piefed.social (+78%), feddit.online (+46%)
• Decreases (all deviations within normal noise except anarchist.nexus, which only has 12% noise): piefed.blahaj.zone (-9%), piefed.world (-7%), quokk.au (-12%), anarchist.nexus (-19%)
• It looks like the decreases are all from instances that haven't switched to v1.7.

This seems like strange behavior, to me. The day your instance switches to v1.7 it sees a 50+% increase in DAU (for larger instances), regardless of past behavior or how the rest of the piefed instances are doing.

• Ex. when piefed.zip updated to v1.7 the top 10 piefed instances went from 2583 (2026-07-08) down to 2065 (2026-07-09). Piefed.zip had 72 DAU (2026-07-08), then the following day 126 DAU (2026-07-09). This pattern seems to repeat for all the "larger" piefed instances (small sample size though).
• Is there a bug in the v1.7 active user code?
• However, fedinsfw.app DAU and MAU use changes seem to map pretty 1:1 to each other (443 DAU increase v 425 MAU increase, almost all new users). So, that wouldn't hold if there were a bug (other instances don't see nearly all the new DAU (on the upgrade day) as completely new users).
• Any admin's willing to check their active users another way or look at their internal network traffic before and after their update?

Notes:

1. Threadiverse is Piefed, Lemmy, and Mbin. Fediverse only accounts for listed software [17], not the other [112] software tracked by Fediverse-Observer.
2. Fediverse-Observer provides daily MAU back to 20221130. FediDB only provides a current snapshot (snapshot within the last 15 minutes, no time series data) and only tracks some of the software [67].
3. FediDB seems to use unclear math to get there counts and overestimate the MAU on most software (see previous post, if interested in learning more).
